What exactly is a headless guitar? Why are people fascinated by it?

The origin of the headless guitar
In fact, musical instruments similar to headless guitars appeared around 1800. The predecessor of the guitar, the lute has a headless version, and the great composer Bach has composed several pieces for the lute.

However, the brand that has achieved commercial success with headless guitars in modern times is definitely Steinberger founded by Ned Steinberger. The appearance of headless guitars has also promoted the transformation of the electric guitar industry.
Steinberger was founded in Brooklyn, New York in 1979. The founder, Ned Steinberger, is a furniture designer. His cross-field background allows him to break out of the traditional frame and rethink the essence of guitars and musical instruments to create their unique headless guitars.

Advantages of headless guitars
1. Weight

The point of a headless guitar is that the weight of the whole guitar can be significantly reduced after the head and strings are omitted. The weight of a general guitar is about 3-5 kg, and the weight can reach around 2.2 kg. For performers who need to play multiple songs for a long time on stage, the headless guitar is very friendly and comfortable to carry.
The difference in weight can reduce the burden on the neck and back of musicians, and has a positive impact on health in the long run.

2. Volume and length
The length of the headstock is reduced, reducing the worries of collision. Because of its lightness and convenience to carry, many people have successfully used their carry-on luggage to bring their headless guitars on the plane. When traveling by plane, due to the size of carry-on luggage, most guitars are not suitable at all, no matter how thin the case is. The
company's standards of airlines are different. It is recommended to confirm before boarding.

3. Tuning and intonation
Headless guitars do not have the head and tuning pegs, and the tuning function is shifted to the bridge. Each manufacturer has its own design, but the difference is not big, and it is easy to use.

The strings for adjusting the pitch will be designed together with the bridge.

Headless strings can adjust the pitch in more detail. The gear ratio of traditional strings is about 15-18:1, while the gear ratio of headless strings is 30-40:1. In addition, on a headless guitar, because the strings pass through the nut from the bridge to the part where they are fixed, they run in a straight line to make the pitch more accurate.
The trouble is because there are few parts for headless guitars on the market, and it will be very troublesome if it fails or broken, and the cost is usually not low.

Headless guitars are unique in appearance, but lighter than traditional guitars. They have a smaller volume and a more comfortable playing experience. They do not weaken their functions, and most of them have a cleaner tone. If you don’t mind the shape of a headless guitar, and you want to find a guitar with less load on your body, easy to carry on airplanes, and a more stable pitch, I suggest you try a headless guitar.
