(Solid body)

(Source: https://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/taylor-solidbody-classic-128429)

(Hollow Body)

(Source: https://stringjoy.com/hollow-and-semi-hollow-body-guitars-the-complete-guide/)

(Semi-Hollow Body)

(Chambered Body)

(Source: http://bluesguitarunleashed.com/forum/index.php?threads/chambering-a-solidbody.23008/)

Not only acoustic guitars, electric guitars can also be hollow!!

One of the most obvious differences between most electric guitars and acoustic guitars is solid and hollow. Hollow guitars with sound holes are acoustic guitars, and electric guitars are a solid wood body.

But in fact, electric guitars can be hollow as well, and there are also semi-hollow and chambered body to reduce weight. They are designed to respond to different styles and timbres, and musicians also have a preference for specific designs.

Various body designs have their special features, which will be introduced one by one below.

Solid body

(Source: https://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/taylor-solidbody-classic-128429)

Ninety percent of electric guitars are solid designs. A solid wood body is less difficult to make, so it can be manufacture quickly, and has a variety of appearances and styles. Generally, the body is relatively thin, in order to avoid being too heavy.

A solid guitar has a whole body that can vibrate, so it has better sustain and solid low frequency sound, which is suitable for a variety of music genre.

The solid design will have less feedback when it is playing with high volume and high gain.

The common method of solid body is to glue two pieces of wood with similar texture into one piece. For some coarser manufacture of the body, 5 or more pieces of wood are used to join together. This will have a negative impact on the sustain performance.

Hollow Body

(Source: https://stringjoy.com/hollow-and-semi-hollow-body-guitars-the-complete-guide/)

As the name suggests, the hollow guitar is completely hollow inside. In order to increase the resonance volume of the acoustic, the earliest electric guitar is the hollow guitar, which is the closest to the acoustic guitar in many respects. Hollow guitars are thicker than solid guitars. For musicians who are accustomed to playing acoustic guitars, hollow guitars can be better used. Most of them have F-shaped sound holes on the left and right sides of the front, which looks as elegant as a violin.

The hollow electric guitar has the strongest low frequency sound but the least sustain. The hollow design is also easier to receive the signal sent by the speaker and generate feedback, but the musicians who use the hollow guitar usually do not have the High Gain sound. need.

These guitars are also known as "jazz box" guitars, because jazz musicians often like their warm, round sound. Although some rock musicians use hollow guitars, in general, those who seek a warm, clean guitar sound tend to prefer hollow guitars.

Semi-Hollow Body

(Source:  https://spinditty.com/instruments-gear/Best-Semi-Hollow-Body-Guitar)

Semi-hollow guitars are somewhere between solid and hollow guitars. The semi-hollow shape is similar to the hollow guitar, but the structure is completely different. There are also hollows on both sides of the semi-hollow, but the part where the pickup is installed in the middle is solid, which effectively reduces the feedback. Because it is not easy to feedback, rock, blues and other music styles are also competent and very wide.

The semi-hollow guitar provides a very warm tone and a very resonant sound. The sustain is slightly shorter than the solid guitar, and the resonance is slightly less than that of the hollow guitar; the relative sustain is much more than that of the hollow guitar, and the resonance is much more obvious than that of the solid guitar. The semi-hollow guitar is usually lighter than the solid guitar.

If you want to pursue an airy resonance, but don't want serious feedback, a semi-hollow guitar will be a very suitable choice.

Chambered Body

(Source: http://bluesguitarunleashed.com/forum/index.php?threads/chambering-a-solidbody.23008/)

The back of the heavier solid guitar is a burden on the shoulders for a long time, so some guitar makers decided to dig out some wood to reduce the weight of the body. This is the origin of the Chambered guitar.

The main purpose of the Chambered guitar is to reduce weight, and hope to be as close as possible to the solid guitar in tone. Therefore, the wood removed will not be as much as a semi-hollow or hollow guitar, and the weight is usually reduced by about 1/4 to 1/3. This will also increase a little resonance, and the low frequency will be softer. Since the appearance is sealed, there is no feedback problem.

Although solid guitars and Chambered guitars cannot be judged by their appearance, there is a simple way to distinguish them. Tap the surface of the body lightly with your hands. If it feels like a hollow part, it should be a Chambered guitar.
